Naturopathic medicine is based on the philosophy that our bodies have a powerful, innate healing potential if we fuel it with the right foods; get adequate sleep and physical exercise; and minimise stress.  Your initial naturopathic consultation is typically an hour long as your practitioner takes a detailed health history in order to get a broad understanding of your medical history, current symptoms, family history and health goals. Your practitioner will also determine which additional tests are indicated in order to gain a more thorough understanding of your presenting symptoms and condition. Testing can also be a valuable way of tracking your progress and health outcomes.

Throughout the course of your treatment, your practitioner will prescribe and recommend a variety of different treatment modalities to help get you on the path to well being. These might include: herbal medicines; vitamin and mineral supplements; nutritional and dietary advice; and lifestyle recommendations such as exercise, yoga, meditation, massage or acupuncture.

Herbal Medicine

Herbal medicine is one of the world’s oldest systems of medicine. It utilises the powerful healing properties of plants to heal the body and restore wellness. Each herb or plant has multiple constituents which have profound effects on many of the body systems. In fact, many of today’s modern, pharmaceutical medicines were originally derived from plant compounds. Herbal medicines can be taken in several different forms including: capsules or tablets, teas and liquid extracts. The beauty of using liquid extracts is that your practitioner can mix up a tonic that’s individualised and specific to your needs.


Nutritional Medicine

Having a healthy diet with the right nutritional balance is fundamental to overall health. Essentially, what you put into your mouth every day should nourish and fuel your body. Ideally, a healthy and varied diet should provide all the nutrients, including vitamins, minerals, phytochemicals (specific nutrients contained in plants), fibre etc, which your body needs for optimal functioning. The trouble is however, that due to a variety of reasons, we don’t always make the right choices and our health can suffer as a consequence. Furthermore, (and you’ve probably heard grandma say this before) our food just isn’t what it used to be!

Some common factors affecting nutrient composition in foods:

  • Soils depletion of essential nutrients, particularly minerals.

  • Pesticides and herbacides.

  • Processing and storage.

  • Cooking methods.

  • Genetic modification.

In addition to recommending specific foods, your practitioner may also recommend vitamin, mineral and combination supplements to achieve optimal health. Whilst getting back to basics and having a wholesome and nutritious diet is always the goal, often times, it is helpful to replace some of the bodies specific nutrient requirements in supplemental form. This is due to two main reasons:

  • Due to the factors listed above, sometimes foods alone just simply cannot provide the right amount of vitamins and minerals required to restore a deficiency.

  • Vitamins, minerals and phytochemicals can be used for therapeutic purposes, however, the dosage required may not be achievable through diet alone and as such, supplementation can provide therapeutic dosage ranges.

‘Fad’ diets

Adding to the confusion about making healthy food choices is hearing about the latest and greatest trend of fad diet plastered in the media and advertising. No two people are the same and therefore, what works for one person, isn’t necessarily going to be the diet that works for you! So whether it’s paleo, low carb, high protein, Atkins, blood type, The Zone, juicing, smoothies, cabbage soup, detox… (talk about stressful!!!) it’s an absolute minefield and it’s perfectly ok to be confused about it, but that’s why it’s always more beneficial to speak to a practitioner who can help work out what’s right for you.

Food intolerances and allergies

Many people can suffer from food intolerances or allergies which can also have a major effect on their wellbeing. Your practitioner can work with you to identify and eliminate certain food triggers and assist you with putting together a meal plan to suit your specific nutritional requirements.

How to choose your naturopath
