Nutritional Supplements May Boost Effects of Antidepressants.

Many people with depression (and other mental health concerns) are taking medications for their condition, but unfortunately, some still experience symptoms, or an exacerbation of their symptoms during period of stress, for example.

Nutritional supplements can be used to provide additional support, and in some cases, may actually help to further reduce symptoms.

The following study explores the use of specific nutritional supplements, in conjunction with conventional medications, to reduce depressive symptoms.


SAMe and depression

Published in the American Journal of Psychiatry on the 26th of April, 2016, University of Melbourne and Harvard researchers conducted a systematic review and meta analysis of 40 clinical trials worldwide where nutrient supplementation was used concurrently with antidepressants such as SSRIs, SNRIs and tricylics to treat clinical depression.

Researchers concluded that current evidence supports adjunctive use of SAMe, methylfolate, omega-3, and vitamin D with antidepressants to reduce depressive symptoms.

Whilst this is fantastic news for many people who find they do not get complete symptom relief from antidepressant medications alone, before you run off to the chemist to purchase one of each of these, it is important to get advice from a health professional trained in the use of nutritional supplements.
