Your Moods are Affected by Many Factors

Holistic mental health solutions from your Brisbane Naturopath.

Australians are increasingly suffering from anxiety, depression and other mood-related disorders.

The Australian Psychological Society Stress & Wellbeing Survey of Australians, 2015 revealed that:

Holistic Mental Health

35% of Australians reported having a significant level of distress in their lives

26% of Australians reported above normal levels of anxiety symptoms

26% of Australians reported having moderate to severe depression symptoms

These symptoms can often be attributed to the busy and stressful lives we lead, but you may not have realised, that your moods are actually influenced by a myriad of different physiological processes occurring in the body, and external factors as well.

Therefore, treating depression or anxiety according to the current model of ‘chemical imbalance in the brain’, simply isn’t getting the desired result for everyone.

Depression is not a disease. It is a symptom.

~ Kelly Brogan, MD

Medications may be effective and even life changing for some, but the truth is, they do not work for everyone, and may not address the underlying cause/s of your anxiety, depression, panic disorder, PMS, PMDD, insomnia etc. Furthermore, some people may even experience an exacerbation of their symptoms, and other undesirable side effects. This situation just further highlights the need for us to dig deeper and find the underlying cause and triggers for your condition. For example, if you’re a woman with irregular and heavy periods, or you’re not ovulating, you may be more likely to suffer with anxiety, mood swings and PMS, therefore, we need to address the hormones before your moods can be improved.

Body Mind Spirit

For those who are already taking medications, natural therapies can also complement and support your current treatment regime.

Naturopathically, we look at the body as a whole; incorporating all aspects of the body, mind and spirit, and as a naturopath, I don’t believe we can have complete ‘health’ without all of these areas aligning.

In my experience, there are many different conditions that can affect our moods, these may include:

  • Changing or fluctuating blood sugar levels; diets high in sugar and refined carbohydrates;
  • Hormonal changes: including PMS, menopause and andropause;
  • Chronic stress; burn out and “burning the candle at both ends”;
  • Lack of good quality sleep;
  • Nutrient deficiencies and imbalances.  Specifically, imbalances in zinc to copper ratios, and deficiencies of crucial nutrients such as magnesium and B vitamins;
  • Chronic pain;
  • Thyroid dysfunction;
  • Genetic factors;
  • Disrupted cortisol levels and disordered HPA-axis function;
  • Digestive issues, poor food choices, food intolerances;
  • Vegan and vegetarian diets;
  • Psychological stress and past trauma;
  • Neurotransmitter imbalance.

So where to from here?

No doubt all of this information can be hugely overwhelming and even confusing.  You’re probably thinking..…. Where do I start? Which factors are a problem for me specifically? What can I do about it?

The good news is you don’t have to try and figure it out all on your own! In your comprehensive naturopathic consultation, we gather as much information as possible about your history and current symptoms; certain pathology tests are ordered to gain a clearer picture of the underlying processes; and from there, we put together a treatment plan that’s tailored just for you.  Remember that your Naturopathic treatment can complement your current therapies and work you are doing with your other health care providers (such as your GP, psychologist, counsellor) as well.

Your plan will consist of dietary, herbal and supplement recommendations, as well lifestyle modification techniques so we’re tackling your symptoms from multiple angles. The beauty of seeing a practitioner is not only that you receive individualised treatment, but you also have someone who’s got your back!

We’re complex beings and that is why we need to look beyond a one-size-fits-all approach.

If you think you may be suffering from any of the above symptoms and you need some support, then make an appointment to see naturopath, Zsuzsanna.
